Property Description

If you have been searching for a private Farmette property surrounded by unimaginable beauty, lush trees and wildlife - this is the property for you ! Brook Valley Farm is nestled on 2.4 acres surrounded by mature trees, fresh water streams and rich landscape. Extraordinary value in the heart of Montgomery County’s agriculture reserve. A rare opportunity and unrivaled rural oasis just minutes away to major urban amenities, i270 and Clarksburg.

As your enter Brook Valley Farm you'll see an old farm house through the trees; it's a bumpy lane, so go slow. The grass is called "cottage grass" and is redolent of the old days, with springtime violets, clover, and summertime wild strawberries. No pesticides have been used on any of the land. You drive over the small stream. It's the spot where deer cross over each night, going from the larger stream on your right, over to the small stream and up into the hills where they'll rest until morning. If you sit on the porch as the light fades, you can watch the skittish deer cross the yard in their daily ritual.

What was originally a log cabin back in 1830 saw some "improvements" in the early 1900's. The original beams, cut on site and still supporting the sleeping loft, are doing their job well. The kitchen affords space for a table and chairs and three garden windows were put in to provide additional space to start seeds or place some houseplants.

The 1909 "improvements" added a wrap around space referred to as the Victorian addition. It provided a downstairs parlor with fireplace, a staircase to an upstairs small bedroom and larger primary bedroom. The addition connected the cabin loft space and added sleeping porches. These were enclosed when water was brought into the house in 1953 and the porches were transformed into two dressing rooms with closets and vanities, ending in one shared bath. Downstairs, another bathroom, laundry room and additional room (office) were added. The kitchen was updated in 2005, downstairs bath in 2014 and upstairs bath in 2023. Both bathrooms are accessible with low threshold showers.

The outbuildings and pool deck were probably added in the late 1960's or 1970's. A new liner and automatic cover were updated in 2004-5. The old chicken house was convenient to store umbrellas and chairs; the old smokehouse is the home of the pool filter and storage shed.

One owner was affiliated with the National Arboretum and loved to bring plant cuttings and trees out to the farm. More fond of a palette of green to a more colorful one, you still see the results in the wide variety of the green shades of spring and summer, the vibrant red of a driveway maple, and the cedar that towers over the side door of the house. Many willows and curly willows follow the course of the stream to the West of the house. The property is occasionally visited by a heron who does indeed act as if he owns the place. Every Spring there are geese who are sure that this is a good place for their nest. Tree frogs are wonderfully loud each Spring as they confirm the change of seasons and Summer brings out the fireflies.

Brook Valley Farm is close to The Comus Inn for a special night out or a fabulous brunch spot (2.5 miles), Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard (4 miles) with it's events, and about 11 miles from Monocacy National Battlefield to the Northeast. There's more to discover in this area as you wander the byways.
